Who Jesus Really Is

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”John 1:1-3 (NIV)

Have you ever been mistaken for someone else? If it has happened you can testify that it is a very awkward moment. They are talking to you about things you don’t really know, and they reference people you have never met. At some point you have to say, “Excuse me, I think you have confused me with someone else!”

I wonder if Jesus ever thinks that about us? Most of us know bits and pieces about Jesus but have never really taken the time to know and understand all we can about Him. Some have connected to his grace and mercy but don’t have an understanding of his wrath and hatred for sin. Others have connected to his power to forgive our sin but don’t really know and understand how He works in us to overcome sin.

Today’s passage is an eye opener for some as well. Most of us are familiar with the story of Jesus being born in a manger and living a sinless life on planet earth so that He could be the sacrifice that would take away our sins forever. But the one we know as Jesus did not begin His existence the night He was born in a manger.

Notice what today’s passage says about Jesus (the Word)…

  • He was God…
  • He was with God in the beginning…
  • He is the creator of all things…

It is hard for us to fathom Jesus existing before He was born, but that’s because we have a bad habit of trying to make Jesus into our own image. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (the blessed three in one) has existed since before creation. If we truly have asked Jesus to be our Lord and Savior, knowing this truth is essential if we are really going to know Him.

Because He is God, He is not someone to try to bluff or manipulate. He is the source of all that was, is and ever shall be and we should be asking for and listening to His will rather than spending so much time telling Him how to do His business… HE IS GOD! He has the eternal perspective that vindicates everything that He chooses to let happen.

He is also the creator of all things, including you! He knew what He wanted to do through you and created it in you even before you were born. This includes your talents and abilities as well as your defects. If you are someone who is always striving to be something you are not, or are envious of the gifts, talents and abilities of others you are showing that you don’t accept or appreciate Jesus the Creator of you.

Just like any relationship, the longer you are with someone the more you get to know who they really are. Talk to the Lord Jesus today about your desire to know who He really is. Ask the Lord to break down the false ways that you think you know Him and ask Him to show you who He really is. Celebrate the truth that He is God and that He created everything that is, including you.
