“And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.” – Ephesians 1:23 (NLT)
What makes a church great? Is it a superabundance of talented, gifted or generous people? Is it people who are super willing to go places and do things that most people would not be willing to?
Today’s passage reminds us that the church is the Lord’s body, and it is great as Jesus is allowed to fill it and complete it. People don’t make the church great… Jesus Christ does. The living Lord Jesus empowers and leads his people (the church) to be all it can fully be for God. If a church is not doing great things, there is a good chance that his people are limiting the Lord in some way.
The personal application for each of us in this passage is to remember that we are a part of the body. God has placed us in the body for specific reasons related to the way he has blessed us with gifts, talents and abilities. A defective or rebellious part will have an impact on the body as a whole. We should seek to let Christ fill and complete our individual part of the body and we should be praying for the other parts and encouraging them to let Christ fill and complete them.
How about you? Are you a part of the body that seeks the filling and fullness of Jesus? Do you pray for other members of the body and encourage them to be all they can be in Christ Jesus? Ask the Lord to give you a passion to be filled and full of Christ, and pray and encourage other folks in your church to do the same so God will be able to do His amazing work in and through the church.
